photoTonsillectomy and Adenoidectomy

Tonsillectomies and adenoidectomies can help patients suffering from frequent sore throats and ear infections. They are very common pediatric procedures, but can also be performed on adults. These procedures are not always performed at the same time. Only one may be needed, sometimes both.

Located on both sides in the back of the mouth, tonsils are a part of the immune system to help fight off infections. The adenoids also help fight off infections and are located behind the soft palate (roof) of the mouth. When the adenoids swell they can cause blockage in the eustachian tubes, which connect the middle ear to the back of the nose. The blockage can cause an infection by allowing the middle ear to fill with pus. It can also lead to hearing loss.

Tonsilitis Treatments

Patients suffering from tonsillitis are typically treated with antibiotics. However, if the the infection often recurs

Tonsillitis usually needs to be treated with antibiotics. However, if the infections recur frequently, the tonsils may need to removed surgically. Tonsillectomy (tonsil removal) and adnoidectomy (adenoid removal) surgeries are performed under general anesthesia as an out-patient procedure. Patients are typically able to return home several hours after surgery.
